Understanding Mobile Home Insurance & What It Covers

Be sure you know what your mobile home insurance coversWhen you park your mobile home for the season and set it up, ready to go, you will want to make sure that you’ve got everything packed and ready, right?  The last thing on your mind is going to be insurance.  So, take the time now to make sure that you’ve got the right protection on your mobile home and that it’s covering what you think it is.  After all, you don’t want to find out after the fact that you weren’t covered for something that you thought you were, right?

Below, we’ll talk about what it is, what’s covered by it, and some common exceptions to be aware of so that you don’t get caught with a gap in your coverage that you weren’t expecting. Don’t forget to check out this blog on What to Know About Your RV.

What is mobile home insurance?

This is a specific kind of insurance policy related to your mobile home, as opposed to your vehicle insurance or your standard home insurance.  This is the kind of policy you would be required to have on your mobile home before you can take it out on the road.

What is covered by mobile home insurance?

Even though most people consider it as a vacation residence or a camp, the policy for your mobile home is going to be very similar to a traditional car insurance policy!  Many of the same things are covered, including:

  • Collision, comprehension, and liability coverage
  • Limited property damage (for the belongings in your mobile home)
  • Personal injury protection
  • Uninsured motorist protection

If you’ve had an auto policy before, all of these are very familiar.  When you look at the policy itself, it’s basically just a fancy vehicle.  After all, since you’re taking out on the road regularly, that’s pretty much what it is.  You’re just taking a lot of things with you!  As far as protection for the “home” itself, you can expect details such as:

  • Explosions
  • Fire and smoke damage
  • Lightening, wind, hail damage
  • Vandalism

In most policies, auto and home-wise, all of these things are considered standard.  However, some things aren’t covered, which you’re going to want to know about before hitting the road.

What isn’t covered in standard mobile home insurance?

Just like a classic homeowner’s policy, there is no coverage for flooding, be it man-made flooding or natural disaster-related flooding (like hurricanes).

The other exclusion of coverage for your structure itself is going to be that most mobile home insurance policies don’t offer coverage while the home is in transit.  The policy is meant for when the home is stationary and most coverage doesn’t apply if it’s moving.  Seems unfair, perhaps, but it’s how it works!

Your mobile home is important to protect with the right insurance policy, so you’ll want to make sure that you have the right information working in your favor.  Want to be sure what you’re covered for and what you’re not?  The best thing to do is to contact your insurance agent and go over everything section by section.  It may just end up saving you a massive headache down the road!  If you already have coverage, why not schedule an annual review with your insurance agent so you can recap all of your coverages and ensure you are properly covered.
